What is a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a procedure that enables your physician to examine the lining of the colon (large bowel) for abnormalities, by inserting a flexible tube that is about the thickness of your finger, into the anus and advancing it slowly into the rectum and colon.

What preparation is required?

The colon must be completely clean for the procedure to be accurate and complete. Your physician will give you detailed instructions regarding the dietary restrictions to be followed, and the cleansing routine to be used. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. If you do not, the procedure may have to be cancelled and repeated later.

What about my current medications?

Most medications may be continued as usual. You should inform your physician of all current medications, as well as any allergies to medications, several days prior to examination. However, drugs such as aspirin or anticoagulants (blood thinners) are examples of medications whose use should be discussed with your physician.

What can be expected during a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is usually well tolerated and rarely causes much pain. There is often a feeling of pressure, bloating, or cramping at times during the procedure. Your doctor may give you medication through a vein to help you relax and better tolerate any discomfort from the procedure. You will by lying on your side or on your back while the colonoscope is advanced slowly through the large intestine. As the colonoscope is slowly withdrawn, the lining is again carefully examined. The procedure usually takes 8 – 20 minutes. In some cases, passage of the colonoscope through the entire colon to its junction with the small intestine cannot be achieved. The physician will decide if the limited examination is sufficient or if other examinations are necessary.

What if the colonoscopy shows something abnormal?

If your doctor thinks an area of the bowel needs to be evaluated in greater detail, a forceps instrument is passed through the colonoscope to obtain a biopsy (a sample of colon lining). This specimen is submitted to the pathology laboratory for analysis. If the colonoscopy is being performed to identify sites of bleeding, the areas of bleeding may be controlled through the colonoscope by injecting certain medications or by coagulation (sealing off bleeding vessels with heat treatment). If polyps are found, they are generally removed. None of these additional procedures typically produce pain. Remember, the biopsies are taken for many reasons and do not necessarily mean that cancer is suspected.

What are polyps, and why are they removed?

Polyps are abnormal growths from the lining of the colon which vary in size from a tiny dot to several inches. The majority of polyps are benign (noncancerous) but the doctor cannot always tell a benign from a malignant (cancerous) polyp by its outer appearance alone. For this reason, removed polyps are sent for tissue analysis. Removal of colon polyps is an important means of preventing colorectal cancer.

How are polyps removed?

Tiny polyps may be totally destroyed by fulguration (burning), but larger polyps are removed by a technique called snare polypectomy. The doctor passes a wire loop (snare) through the colonoscope and severs the attachment of the polyp from the intestinal wall by means of an electrical current. You should not feel pain during polypectomy. There is a small risk that removing a polyp will cause bleeding or result in a burn to the wall of the colon, which could require emergency surgery.

What happens after a colonoscopy?

After colonoscopy, your physician will explain the results to you. You may have some cramping or bloating because of the air introduced into the colon during the examination. This should disappear quickly with the passage of flatus (gas). Generally, you should be able to eat after leaving the colonoscopy, but your doctor may restrict your diet and activities, especially after a polypectomy.

Why do I need someone to drive me home?

Even if you feel alert after the procedure, your judgment and reflexes may be impaired by the sedation for the rest of the day, making it unsafe for you to drive or operate any machinery.

What are the possible complications of colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy and polypectomy are generally safe when performed by physicians who have been specially trained and are experienced in these endoscopic procedures.

One possible complication is a perforation or tear through the bowel wall that could require surgery. Bleeding may occur from the site of biopsy or polypectomy. It is usually minor and stops on its own, or can be controlled through the colonoscope. Rarely, blood transfusions or surgery may be required. Other potential risks include a reaction to the sedatives used and complications from lung or heart disease. Localized irritation of the vein where medications were injected may rarely cause a tender lump lasting for several weeks, but this will go away eventually. Applying hot packs or hot moist towels may help relieve discomfort.

Although complications after colonoscopy are uncommon, it is important for you to recognize early signs of any possible complication. Contact your physician who performed the colonoscopy if you notice any of the following symptoms: severe abdominal pain, fever and/or chills, or rectal bleeding of more than 1/2 cup. Bleeding can occur several days after polypectomy.

How a colonoscopy works

“A colonoscopy is a procedure where your GI doctor looks in your large intestine with a flexible scope. This is done to look for polyps or other diseases that affect the colon.

Although it sounds a bit unpleasant, patients are sedated and the procedure is painless. For a lot of folks, the preparation is the worst part. The prep involves only drinking clear liquids and avoiding solid foods the day before the procedure. Patients then drink a laxative solution to clear out the colon completely. So the grunt work is really done the day before, where you should probably stay home and close to the bathroom.

Anyone with intestinal or bowel problems can undergo a colonoscopy, but everyone should have a colonoscopy at age 50 to look for polyps!”

Dr Webber is absolutely the kindest Dr I've ever been a patient of.
I can imagine that the medical profession is very demanding and I've been in offices where the Dr's have been short and barely stay in the room 2 minutes and I'm left with more questions than I walked in with but not with Dr Webber, I was the last appointment of the day and I'm sure he was ready for his day to be over but he stayed in there and answered every question that I had and was so kind and caring.
I highly recommend Dr Weber and his staff which were also completely amazing.
Thank you for showing that you actually care about your patients.
Jean V.

Professionalism at it’s finest.

Friendly on the phone, doctor’s office had that same feel, chipper & upbeat. Nurses were professional, speedy & helpful. The doctor I seen was friendly, and delivered good news after the procedure. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall experience, I would definitely recommend you get in, have that colonoscopy done sooner than later. The technology can save your life, so if you haven’t thought about it, perhaps it’s time. If you have been putting it off, let me be that voice of reason. Set up appointment & be done with it for 10 years.

I’m a Champion for my own health, thank you CDH for assisting me in a lifestyle where I put my health first.

I’ve been a patient at Center for Digestive Health for over 25years and have had nothing but exceptional care with Dr Nandi and the Nurse Practitioners Nicolette and other NPs in the practice. Front staff and medical staff are all professional and friendly. My questions are answered and I don’t feel rushed when the NP or physician are with me during an office visit. All have very good communicative skills with patients which is a huge plus.
Diane E.
Addressed all of our concerns, friendly and thorough . Facility was clean, and reception desk helpful. No wait was especially nice.
Emily B.
My doctor is awesome. I refuse to put his name on a bad review. Over the years, the staff just keeps getting worse and worse. I was supposed to schedule an EGD for my continuous nausea and vomiting, but it turns out I had an outstanding bill that already went to collections. Admittedly, I do not open my mail, but anytime I visit, I ask if I have an open balance, because I'd pay. I asked back in November, when I had a colonoscopy, if I had a balance at the time. The answer was NO, $0 balance. When I went to schedule they said because my deductible is not met, the procedure would be $680 without biopsies and I'd have to pay my previous balance of $500 that they already sent to collections, and then $300 up front for the EGD. My deductible is only $500. I'm incredibly confused. So I've now paid off my balance to the debt collector, but can't afford to get my procedure. Had they told me I had a bill-back in November-I'd have been able to get help now.
I'll still return to see my doctor because I don't hold him responsible for the incompetency of his staff.
Furthermore, why couldn't I just start paying my balance on the new ridiculous bill you were going to charge, which I don't think is fully accurate? Instead I paid off the $432 to collections because I HAD to, they say, before they can schedule me. The outstanding bill, btw, was from Pinnacle anesthesia because apparently anesthesia is not covered for an endoscopic procedure. Weird. I guess I could schedule my endoscopy and we can talk about me staying awake for it? Does that get me a discount?!?

Then, THEN, I call the collections company and I paid my full balance they gave me, but THEN the office says the billing company got the number wrong and I still owe $107 after paying over $400. Again, I HAVE to pay the debt they already sold to collections before they will help. Their mistake is preventing me from getting help. And the collections agency doesn't know what I owe. I'm being held captive by the incompetency of this billing team. I called Monday and still waiting on a call back. It's Friday.

This has happened to me before here, and I paid the bill off at once then too. I actually offer copays, check my balance ANYTIME I've been in the office. Just because you guys are awful at your job and don't bill properly or timely doesn't mean I should have to suffer.

Holding me captive over a balance in collections that I paid on 8/06, per my credit receipt.

When I asked about my balance in person at my colonoscopy, remember it was $0. I have not been seen since. Yet my bills are from prior to that!

Seriously too, they could've told me my balance before my tele health visit with my doctor. Or the 4 times I scheduled a telehealth this year and got canceled on multiple times by you guys. At ANY point you could have let me know my balance. I also could have opened my mail- I get it- but you could also just be competent at your JOB. I don't get paid for opening my mail. You are getting paid to do your job right.

Dr. Nandi- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Office staff- 🌪
*Update: Rescheduled at their other office although it was after I already figured out my own problem and got it under control myself. Had the endoscopy at Macomb anyway, and it went really smooth. Dr. Nandi is so understanding, and listened when I explained I think I was having a reaction to a medication I was taking. He is honestly great enough to deal with a couple bad apple staff members. Most of the team is great.

Honestly, I don't even entirely blame the billing staff- I blame their system. The people were nice enough, they just don't know how to get everything figured out due to too many hands in the pot. Just be cautious.
HANK W.
Very friendly and a well-oiled machine!

I feel Dr. Bakken listened to me and was very thorough. She is a sweetheart and very nice. Scheduling was very efficient and I felt her office was too. You need to have an office that runs efficiently. I had an experience with another office that was not so I quit going to them.
Gene F.
Nicolette VanMaldeghem was very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with me unlike many other doctors who can't wait to get out of the room.,
Jaden D.
I have had really bad experiences with Gastroenterologists in the past due to my history with bulimia nervosa. I have complications from years of my illness, and have been turned down by Gastros in the past or them downplaying my symptoms. I was really anxious going into this appt with Dr. Richard Wille, however I had the best experience ever! He listened to me, didnt make me feel bad about my history, and developed a plan to figure out what's going on. I never make reviews, however, I am just so grateful to have found a doctor who actually cares and listens to their patients. I definitely recommend him to anyone who is looking for a gastroenterologist!
Rochelle C.
The staff was very helpful and professional. The Doctor (Bakken) was very knowledgeable & very detailed in her examination and gathering my personal information & family history & events. Great experience overall!
Karen A.

Barbara T.
My husband Ken had his colonoscopy on December 1, with Dr. Desai. Thankfully , my results were great. Dr. Desai was great, affable, explained everything well, spent as much time as we needed to tell us what he did and how it went. He provided photos (yay) of various parts of my colon during the test. I may frame them… Anyway, the prep is always the worst part of these test ordeals, but Dr. Desai’s pre-procedure protocol took a bit longer but was gentler, which I appreciated. His office staff was great, well organized and efficient. The nurses and techs were also friendly, skilled. and encouraging. I would recommend anyone to see Dr. Desai and his group for such procedures.
Diane M.
Truly friendly and experienced staff, beginning with admission. Dr. Weber and his staff are the reason I've continued as his patient throughout the years. Thank you to all who made my experience seamless.
Thomas H.

My husband saw a physician assistant, Jennifer, who was enormously helpful and understanding. Some of the issues we were having, she referred to Patricia Brown, who phoned us almost as soon as we got home. As my husband said, “they are really on top of their game.”

Bill G.
I think doctor Balogna is an excellent doctor. Everything went very well!

The worst part about a colonoscopy is the day before with no eating and cleansing your system. Once that was over the experience at Macomb Endoscopy was awesome. Very friendly, and FAST. Was in and out (no pun intended) in no time! Everyone from the second you check-in to the very end were very friendly.
Linda D.

Bradley T.
The staff was uncommonly helpful and friendly. Both when I called on the phone with questions and in person in the office.
George K.
I had a procedure this morning with Dr. Nandi at the Surgical Centers of Michigan located on Investment Drive. Dr. Nandi as always was the most professional and caring doctor that I have encountered.
But, what impressed me was the staff in the office. The TEAM (receptionist, the nurse who checked me and made me ready for the procedure, Anesthesiologist and nurse in the procedure room, the recovery room nurse, the PA who called me later in the day to check-up on me) showed me such care and compassion. It made me feel as if I was the most important patient that they would encounter.
It is obvious that these professionals love what they are doing. They love helping others. That made all the difference to me.
Thank you.
robyn G.
Love Dr Balonga and Margaret!
Bernie W.
Dr. Bologna reviewed my medical history and discussed my current situation. His care, compassion and willingness to do lab tests before any invasive procedures was refreshing. I have complete confidence in his ability to address my current issue.
Amy L.
Friendly staff & very efficient. Dr. Baaken is the BEST!
Chris F.
If it is possible to say, I had a great experience with the entire team when I had my procedure. Due to a bad experience in the past at another medical facility I was terrified to have anything done, but from start to finish they all treated me with kindness, caring, and complete professionalism that made me extremely comfortable both during and after the entire process. I highly recommend!
Mark P.
All of the Staff and the Doctor working at the office were very nice. The doctor understood my concern about My Bi Polar meds because of the reaction I had during my recent heart bypass surgery and the time it took to get back to normal again. The doctor came up with several solutions to my fear of having to get the Anastasia while taking my Bi polar meds and suggested a few other solutions to the the Anastasia. The doctor was great in understanding of my fear of going under Anastasia.
Hope L.
Jennifer was great! Easy to talk to and very knowledgeable! All of the staff were kind and helpful and skilled at their jobs

I walked in and everyone was so amazingly friendly! Abby made me and my family feel relaxed. My PA (sorry I forgot your name) listened to everything I said! She NEVER blew off anything I described and almost instantly my systems eased when I started the meds she prescribed. Not gone but eased is so much better! I highly recommend going here!!!!! But only if you want to feel better quickly!!!

My experience at the Center for Digestive Health was awesome. Considering what I personally went through preparing for my colonoscopy once I got there everything was so smooth from the receptionist to the woman asking the questions when I got taken back into the room, to the nurses who were watching over me, and Dr Wille who was very kind and caring as they all were. Let me add the nurse who was taking care of me when I woke up how great and wonderful she was to me. Then my wheelchair ride to my car...all went perfectly awesome!
Mia D.
I Really feel a deep sense of peace and trust in Dr Richard Willie. He knows first of all how to interact with his patients, listens carefully to them, and makes them feel important. Have been going to him at least 15 years, if not more. He is an astute observer, a fine doctor with honed in skills of lab interpretation, biopsy results, and well experienced in advising what’s best for the patients outcome. I couldn’t be in better hand with Dr Wille. I’m very fortunate to have him in my corner as a doctor who has both the training and wisdom to give me the best care now and for the future!

Thank you goodbye . Dr. Syed was very pleasant. I enjoyed talking with her. I think that she has a new patient. Thank you, goodbye
Denise K.
I changed to Dr Willy because I wasn't getting any progress from my previous Dr. Things aren't going any differently here. He wants to schedule more tests that I've already had on more than one occasion. I had 17 ERCPs in 3 years with my previous DR. and now he wants another. I did the colonoscopy and EUS 2 years ago with Dr Willey. He said to make sure he didn't miss anything. If he missed something I don't want him as my Dr.!
Maria W.
Great and fantastic people… very kind and caring!
N S.

Hi I have been a patient of Center for Digestive Health since I was in my mid 20's. I am now in my late 40's now.. I have seen Dr.Donat and a few of the other Dr's in the practice. Dr. Donat has been my primary person. He has been amazing. My problems have been complicated and challenging. I know I have caused him head scratching moments of wondering what the heck is wrong. Yet all thru it his bedside manner has been amazing kind he answers all my questions. He never makes you feel uncomfortable or unimportant. If you have GI issues or need GI help. Go see him. Or anyone of the other staff. The office staff is amazing as well his Medical Assistant Sarah is so thoughtful. Thank you everyone at The Center For Digestive Health For Making what could be an uncomfortable time less difficult.

I liked the location. My Primary Care, Dr. Buchanan is located in the same bldg. An easy trip to get to! I was assisted right away and the PA was most pleasant and very easy to talk to. She listened well. Asked great questions and made some suggestions. She recommended requesting a couple of tests to help diagnose my situation. I felt she did a throughal job of listening and answering my concerns and thoughts.

FAQs

What happens during my first visit?
If you are a new patient, you can expect to have a complete physical exam. You will also be asked detailed questions about your current problems and your past medical history, your current medications, allergies, your family history and other pertinent medical information. If you are taking medications, please bring a completed medical history form with you to your appointment. Once the physician has reviewed your medical information and completed the physical examination, a plan of care will be developed. You may need to be seen again in the office, be referred back to your family physician for follow-up care, or require additional testing. If additional tests are needed, we will assist you in scheduling these tests.
What if I need to schedule an endoscopic procedure?

An endoscopic procedure allows the physician to visualize a part of your gastrointestinal tract with a special instrument called an endoscope. If your family physician has ordered testing, you will be contacted by telephone by one of our staff members. If a physician orders testing and you are in the office, the procedure can generally be scheduled during the course of your visit. You will be given a date, time, and location for the test, as well as written instructions telling you how to prepare for the test. If you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to ask one of our staff members or the physician.

How do I get test results?

We ask that you wait 10 to 14 days before contacting us for results. Often results come from several different sources. This information needs to be compiled and reviewed by your physician before you can be appropriately advised.

What insurances do you accept?

We accept payment from most insurance companies including Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Physicians Health Plan, Cofinity, Sparrow Professional Health Network, Medicaid, McLaren, Health Plus, and several others. Accepted insurances are subject to change at any time without notice.

If your insurance requires an authorization from your primary care physician, you may be asked to assist us in obtaining this authorization.

All patients are responsible for all copays and deductibles at the time of service.

If you have any questions regarding your benefits or insurance coverage, please contact our Billing Department at 248-844-9710.

What if I need to contact the doctor?

To contact your doctor during business hours please call our main number 248-844-9710. If you have an urgent need to speak with the doctor after hours, you will be rerouted to our after hours answering service, and your doctor will be paged. In the case of a medical emergency please proceed directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.
