What is C. Difficile Colitis?

According to experts, C. difficile colitis is an infection that is caused by a type of bacteria called Clostridium difficile. C. difficile colitis can vary in severity; in some cases, it causes a bout of diarrhea, but sometimes, it can lead to a serious colon infection, which can be life-threatening.

Symptoms of C. Difficile Colitis

C. difficile colitis can cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. Typically, symptoms begin five to 10 days after a person starts using an antibiotic medication, but they can appear as soon as a day after, or as long as two months after beginning an antibiotic.

In mild to moderate cases, C. difficile colitis symptoms include the following:

  • Mild abdominal cramps
  • Tenderness in the abdomen
  • Watery diarrhea at least three times per day for two or more days

In severe cases, symptoms of C. difficile colitis include:

  • Severe pain and cramping in the abdomen
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Watery diarrhea occurring as many as 10-15 times daily
  • Blood or pus in the stool
  • Lack of appetite
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Dehydration
  • Weight loss
  • Swelling in the abdomen
  • Elevated white blood cell count
  • C. difficile colitis can even cause life-threatening complications, such as kidney failure, enlarged colon, severe intestinal inflammation, and sepsis.

Causes of C. Difficile Colitis

There are several potential causes of C. difficile colitis, but one common cause of this condition is antibiotic use. When a person uses antibiotics, these medications kill some of the healthy bacteria found in the body, which can cause C. difficile to grow quickly.

Other risk factors for C. difficile colitis include:

  • Staying in a healthcare facility, such as a hospital or nursing home
  • Having abdominal surgery
  • Having a weakened immune system
  • Having serious medical conditions like colorectal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Being age 65 or older
  • Having had C. difficile colitis in the past
  • How is C. Difficile Colitis Treated?

If you think you may have C. difficile colitis, it is important to seek treatment, because this condition can cause complications such as kidney failure, bowel perforation, and even death if left untreated.

The first part of treatment for C. difficile colitis is to stop taking the antibiotic that triggered the infection. While it may seem counterintuitive, treatment for C. difficile colitis usually involves taking another antibiotic.

In severe cases of C. difficile colitis, surgery may be necessary to remove the unhealthy portion of the colon. If C. difficile colitis is recurring, a doctor may perform a procedure called fecal microbiota transplant, in which stool from a healthy donor is implanted in an infected colon.

Treatment is important to prevent complications from C. difficile colitis, so you should seek medical care promptly if you have had watery diarrhea three or more times per day for two days or symptoms like bloody stool or severe abdominal cramping.

The first line of treatment for C. difficile colitis is typically an antibiotic. If symptoms are serious, you may need surgery to remove part of the colon, or a fecal microbiota transplant, in which you receive stool from a healthy donor to be implanted into your colon.

My doctor is awesome. I refuse to put his name on a bad review. Over the years, the staff just keeps getting worse and worse. I was supposed to schedule an EGD for my continuous nausea and vomiting, but it turns out I had an outstanding bill that already went to collections. Admittedly, I do not open my mail, but anytime I visit, I ask if I have an open balance, because I'd pay. I asked back in November, when I had a colonoscopy, if I had a balance at the time. The answer was NO, $0 balance. When I went to schedule they said because my deductible is not met, the procedure would be $680 without biopsies and I'd have to pay my previous balance of $500 that they already sent to collections, and then $300 up front for the EGD. My deductible is only $500. I'm incredibly confused. So I've now paid off my balance to the debt collector, but can't afford to get my procedure. Had they told me I had a bill-back in November-I'd have been able to get help now.
I'll still return to see my doctor because I don't hold him responsible for the incompetency of his staff.
Furthermore, why couldn't I just start paying my balance on the new ridiculous bill you were going to charge, which I don't think is fully accurate? Instead I paid off the $432 to collections because I HAD to, they say, before they can schedule me. The outstanding bill, btw, was from Pinnacle anesthesia because apparently anesthesia is not covered for an endoscopic procedure. Weird. I guess I could schedule my endoscopy and we can talk about me staying awake for it? Does that get me a discount?!?

Then, THEN, I call the collections company and I paid my full balance they gave me, but THEN the office says the billing company got the number wrong and I still owe $107 after paying over $400. Again, I HAVE to pay the debt they already sold to collections before they will help. Their mistake is preventing me from getting help. And the collections agency doesn't know what I owe. I'm being held captive by the incompetency of this billing team. I called Monday and still waiting on a call back. It's Friday.

This has happened to me before here, and I paid the bill off at once then too. I actually offer copays, check my balance ANYTIME I've been in the office. Just because you guys are awful at your job and don't bill properly or timely doesn't mean I should have to suffer.

When I asked about my balance in person at my colonoscopy, remember it was $0. I have not been seen since. Yet my bills are from prior to that!

Seriously too, they could've told me my balance before my tele health visit with my doctor. Or the 4 times I scheduled a telehealth this year and got canceled on multiple times by you guys. At ANY point you could have let me know my balance. I also could have opened my mail- I get it- but you could also just be competent at your JOB. I don't get paid for opening my mail. You are getting paid to do your job right.

*Update: Rescheduled at their other office although it was after I already figured out my own problem and got it under control myself. Had the endoscopy at Macomb anyway, and it went really smooth. Dr. Nandi is so understanding, and listened when I explained I think I was having a reaction to a medication I was taking. He is honestly great enough to deal with a couple bad apple staff members. Most of the team is great.

Honestly, I don't even entirely blame the billing staff- I blame their system. The people were nice enough, they just don't know how to get everything figured out due to too many hands in the pot. Just be cautious.

Hi I have been a patient of Center for Digestive Health since I was in my mid 20's. I am now in my late 40's now.. I have seen Dr.Donat and a few of the other Dr's in the practice. Dr. Donat has been my primary person. He has been amazing. My problems have been complicated and challenging. I know I have caused him head scratching moments of wondering what the heck is wrong. Yet all thru it his bedside manner has been amazing kind he answers all my questions. He never makes you feel uncomfortable or unimportant. If you have GI issues or need GI help. Go see him. Or anyone of the other staff. The office staff is amazing as well his Medical Assistant Sarah is so thoughtful. My husband Ken had his colonoscopy on December 1, with Dr. Desai. Thankfully , my results were great. Dr. Desai was great, affable, explained everything well, spent as much time as we needed to tell us what he did and how it went. He provided photos (yay) of various parts of my colon during the test. I may frame them… Anyway, the prep is always the worst part of these test ordeals, but Dr. Desai’s pre-procedure protocol took a bit longer but was gentler, which I appreciated. His office staff was great, well organized and efficient. The nurses and techs were also friendly, skilled. and encouraging. I would recommend anyone to see Dr. Desai and his group for such procedures.

I was weighed and the taken to an exam room promptly where BP and temp were taken. Dr. Wille came in shortly after and I was on my way home 20 minutes after my appointment time. Dr. Wille explained test results, discussed my situation, and ordered additional testing, and did not rush me at all.

Arrived at 8:15 for 8:20 colonoscopy appointment. Called to prep room within 5 minutes. Prep explained and got ready for procedure. Procedure and recovery went smoothly and left facility with being there about 90 minutes in total. Dr. Weber did procedure and I was pleased with him. My driver and I went for breakfast and home after that. A follow up call from facility was made to me in afternoon. Very happy with everyone that tended to me. FAQs

What happens during my first visit?
If you are a new patient, you can expect to have a complete physical exam. You will also be asked detailed questions about your current problems and your past medical history, your current medications, allergies, your family history and other pertinent medical information. If you are taking medications, please bring a completed medical history form with you to your appointment. Once the physician has reviewed your medical information and completed the physical examination, a plan of care will be developed. You may need to be seen again in the office, be referred back to your family physician for follow-up care, or require additional testing. If additional tests are needed, we will assist you in scheduling these tests.
What if I need to schedule an endoscopic procedure?

An endoscopic procedure allows the physician to visualize a part of your gastrointestinal tract with a special instrument called an endoscope. If your family physician has ordered testing, you will be contacted by telephone by one of our staff members. If a physician orders testing and you are in the office, the procedure can generally be scheduled during the course of your visit. You will be given a date, time, and location for the test, as well as written instructions telling you how to prepare for the test. If you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to ask one of our staff members or the physician.

How do I get test results?

We ask that you wait 10 to 14 days before contacting us for results. Often results come from several different sources. This information needs to be compiled and reviewed by your physician before you can be appropriately advised. 

What insurances do you accept?

We accept payment from most insurance companies including Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Physicians Health Plan, Cofinity, Sparrow Professional Health Network, Medicaid, McLaren, Health Plus, and several others. Accepted insurances are subject to change at any time without notice.

If your insurance requires an authorization from your primary care physician, you may be asked to assist us in obtaining this authorization.

All patients are responsible for all copays and deductibles at the time of service.

If you have any questions regarding your benefits or insurance coverage, please contact our Billing Department at 248-844-9710.

What if I need to contact the doctor?

To contact your doctor during business hours please call our main number 248-844-9710. If you have an urgent need to speak with the doctor after hours, you will be rerouted to our after hours answering service, and your doctor will be paged. In the case of a medical emergency please proceed directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.
