A colonoscopy is a procedure that is performed on a patient by a gastrointestinal specialist so that the specialist can examine the condition of the inside of the colon. Colonoscopies are necessary to catch cancerous and precancerous polyps and screen for colorectal cancer. Most people should go in for a colonoscopy at least every 10 years once they turn 45.

If it’s time for your first colonoscopy or it’s been a while since your last procedure, take a look at the bulleted list below for some pointers on what you can do to prep before your colonoscopy.

What do I need to know about colon prep before my procedure?

  • You will have to take laxatives to clear out your colon — Yep, you’ve probably heard about this part from someone who has gone through a colonoscopy before. You will be asked by your doctor to take a laxative for a period prior to your procedure. The purpose of the laxative is to clear out the stool from your colon so that your specialist can better view the inside of your colon.
  • You’ll need someone to drive you home after the procedure — It’s essential that you work out something ahead of time with someone who can drive you home after your procedure. If you don’t have someone prepared ahead of the procedure, you will have to reschedule your appointment.
  • You’ll have to go on a low-fiber diet — Don’t worry, though, it’s just for a few days. About three days prior to your procedure, you’ll need to start eating only foods that are low in fiber.
