Endoscopic Mucosal Resection

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection

Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a technique used to remove abnormal tissue, polyps and growths from the digestive tract. Successful EMR procedures often eliminate the need for surgery. EMR involves passage of the endoscope toward the affected area. Then, a device at the end of the endoscope allows removal of the abnormal tissue with cautery techniques. This tissue is then sent for pathology analysis. This technique can remove many lesions that previously required surgery to address.

What to Expect

When you arrive, the nurses will review your medical records and medications, your vitals will be taken and an IV will be started so sedatives can be administered. Once you’ve been sedated, the doctor will place an endoscope through either your mouth or anus, depending on where the abnormal tissue is located. The high-definition endoscope will send the images to a screen. If there is a tumor, the endoscope will be used to apply suction to the tumor to lift it up and away from surrounding tissues. Then, a thin wire will be fed through the endoscope and placed around the base of the tumor. The tumor will be cut using an electrical current sent through the wire. It will seal the cut simultaneously. The tumor will then be suctioned out, removed through the endoscope and sent for pathology analysis. You will be monitored in a recovery room until your vitals are stable, you can tolerate oral liquids and your pain and nausea are controlled.

I had a procedure performed by Dr. Nandi on Friday morning April 22. The members of the team are caring professionals who made me feel at ease. The young lady at check-in was pleasant who efficiently checked me in. I was taken immediately into the prep room where Nurse Brittany kindly took my information and prepped me for the procedure. As she left the room, she made sure that I knew exactly how long it would before they came for me for the procedure. When anesthetist Nurse Mary took me to the procedure room, she explained evey step of what was going to happen. Following the procedure I was taken to the recovery room where recovery Nurse David made sure that I was doing well as I came out anesthesia. Finally, Dr. Nandi, always the best came in for the after procedure council. He always takes as much time as needed to explain the results and to answer any questions that I might have. The whole team approached their roles in a way that I never felt that they did not want to be there. They made me feel as though I was the most important patient who they would see the whole shift.

My experience with Dr.Bakken and the staff was excellent! I didn’t have to wait in the reception room or the examination room for an extended amount of time as I have in the past for other doctors. Dr. Bakken was professional and was prepped by reading my client information sheet…she was also pleasant and concerned with my diagnosis and listened to me explain my symptoms as to why I was seeing her!

FAQs

What happens during my first visit?
If you are a new patient, you can expect to have a complete physical exam. You will also be asked detailed questions about your current problems and your past medical history, your current medications, allergies, your family history and other pertinent medical information. If you are taking medications, please bring a completed medical history form with you to your appointment. Once the physician has reviewed your medical information and completed the physical examination, a plan of care will be developed. You may need to be seen again in the office, be referred back to your family physician for follow-up care, or require additional testing. If additional tests are needed, we will assist you in scheduling these tests.
What if I need to schedule an endoscopic procedure?

An endoscopic procedure allows the physician to visualize a part of your gastrointestinal tract with a special instrument called an endoscope. If your family physician has ordered testing, you will be contacted by telephone by one of our staff members. If a physician orders testing and you are in the office, the procedure can generally be scheduled during the course of your visit. You will be given a date, time, and location for the test, as well as written instructions telling you how to prepare for the test. If you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to ask one of our staff members or the physician.

How do I get test results?

We ask that you wait 10 to 14 days before contacting us for results. Often results come from several different sources. This information needs to be compiled and reviewed by your physician before you can be appropriately advised.

What insurances do you accept?

We accept payment from most insurance companies including Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Physicians Health Plan, Cofinity, Sparrow Professional Health Network, Medicaid, McLaren, Health Plus, and several others. Accepted insurances are subject to change at any time without notice.

If your insurance requires an authorization from your primary care physician, you may be asked to assist us in obtaining this authorization.

All patients are responsible for all copays and deductibles at the time of service.

If you have any questions regarding your benefits or insurance coverage, please contact our Billing Department at 248-844-9710.
