Gallbladder Disease

Gallbladder disease affects the gallbladder, which is a sac that sits just under your liver and is responsible for storing and concentrating bile, which helps with the digestion of fatty foods. When a person has gallbladder disease, they may have an infection, inflammation, stones, or blockage in the gallbladder.

There are several specific conditions that fall under the category of gallbladder disease. For example, cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, whereas chronic acalculous gallbladder disease occurs when the movements that naturally empty the gallbladder do not function as intended.

What causes gallbladder disease?

There are several potential causes of gallbladder disease. For example, gallbladder inflammation, or cholecystitis, is often the result of hard particles called gallstones, which can block the tube that bile passes through, causing inflammation. Gallbladder disease can also be caused by tumors, infections, blood vessel problems, or bile duct blockages. How can you lower your risk of gallbladder disease?

Gallstones are the leading risk factor for gallbladder disease, so you can lower your risk by taking steps to prevent the development of gallstones. Some preventive measures include maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise, but it is important not to drop weight too rapidly, because this can increase the risk of gallstones. It is also helpful to eat a diet that contains plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, because a high fat, low fiber diet can lead to the development of gallstones. How is gallbladder disease treated?

Treatment for gallbladder disease may require hospitalization to control inflammation. During this time, you may receive antibiotics and pain medications to treat your symptoms. You may also have to fast to allow your gallbladder to heal, and a doctor may give you fluids through a vein to prevent dehydration. If you have gallstones, a doctor will likely perform a procedure to remove them, but it is likely that you will eventually need surgery to remove your gallbladder. Fortunately, this is generally a minimally invasive procedure, in which a doctor makes a few small cuts in your abdomen.

Common Symptoms

  • “I started to experience severe pain in the upper right area of my stomach right by my rib cage, and it radiated all the way to my back.”
  • “I felt nauseous and had stomach pain after meals, and I started to have diarrhea all the time.”
  • “I noticed that I looked jaundiced, and my urine was darker than usual. I also had severe abdominal pain along with nausea and vomiting.”

Dr. Bolognia is great. Both my husband and I see him. There is nothing fun about getting a colonoscopy but your staff and Dr. B are so nice and made sure all of my questions were addressed. Definitely recommend him and his Troy surgical staff.
Susan B.
First off I love my doctor. The nurse there was great at starting an IV. She was very kind . The anesthesiologist was also very kind and explained everything. She too was a great person to talk to
Clifford J.
While embarrassing to talk about, I had to go in for my first colonoscopy screening. The center made the process fairly easy and straightforward. The prep work for the previous day was easy to follow and was not nearly as painful as I expected it to be. On the day of the procedure, I was checked in, wheeled into the procedure room, knocked out, and before I knew it, it was over and done with. I was in and out in just a little over two hours. The staff was very friendly and reassuring throughout. They even shared the results with me before I left. It was a very pleasant experience, considering. I highly recommend this facility. BTW - Everything checked out well.

I have been going to dr Nandi since 2014 , at the time I was a minor and my old gi doctor refused to go a colonoscopy on me so at the time I was admitted to Troy Beaumont and my mom demanded an adult gi doctor and it happened to be dr Nandi, he did a colonoscopy outpatient and found out I had crohns disease after suffering for about three years. He put me on remicaid and put it right in remission. ! He also continued to help put my eoe in remission as well He is byfar the best doctor and a live savor ! I greatly appreciate him and will continue to come to him , I have been his patient for over 8 years ! I Highly recommended him !!!

FAQs

What happens during my first visit?
If you are a new patient, you can expect to have a complete physical exam. You will also be asked detailed questions about your current problems and your past medical history, your current medications, allergies, your family history and other pertinent medical information. If you are taking medications, please bring a completed medical history form with you to your appointment. Once the physician has reviewed your medical information and completed the physical examination, a plan of care will be developed. You may need to be seen again in the office, be referred back to your family physician for follow-up care, or require additional testing. If additional tests are needed, we will assist you in scheduling these tests.
What if I need to schedule an endoscopic procedure?

An endoscopic procedure allows the physician to visualize a part of your gastrointestinal tract with a special instrument called an endoscope. If your family physician has ordered testing, you will be contacted by telephone by one of our staff members. If a physician orders testing and you are in the office, the procedure can generally be scheduled during the course of your visit. You will be given a date, time, and location for the test, as well as written instructions telling you how to prepare for the test. If you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to ask one of our staff members or the physician.

How do I get test results?

We ask that you wait 10 to 14 days before contacting us for results. Often results come from several different sources. This information needs to be compiled and reviewed by your physician before you can be appropriately advised.

What insurances do you accept?

We accept payment from most insurance companies including Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Physicians Health Plan, Cofinity, Sparrow Professional Health Network, Medicaid, McLaren, Health Plus, and several others. Accepted insurances are subject to change at any time without notice.

If your insurance requires an authorization from your primary care physician, you may be asked to assist us in obtaining this authorization.

All patients are responsible for all copays and deductibles at the time of service.

If you have any questions regarding your benefits or insurance coverage, please contact our Billing Department at 248-844-9710.

What if I need to contact the doctor?

To contact your doctor during business hours please call our main number 248-844-9710. If you have an urgent need to speak with the doctor after hours, you will be rerouted to our after hours answering service, and your doctor will be paged. In the case of a medical emergency please proceed directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.
