Diarrhea consists of loose, watery stools, and having diarrhea means passing loose stools three or more times a day. Usually, acute diarrhea lasts one or two days, then goes away on its own.

Diarrhea lasting more than two days could indicate a more serious problem, and chronic diarrhea lasting at least four weeks could be a symptom of a chronic disease.

People of all ages can get diarrhea. Diarrhea may cause dehydration, which means the body lacks enough fluid and electrolytes to function properly. Usually, the only treatment required is to replace lost fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration.

Diarrhea symptoms may be reduced by avoiding caffeine, greasy foods, and foods that are high in fiber, sweets, and sugar substitutes.

Over-the-counter medicines (such as Imodium and Pepto-Bismol) may help stop diarrhea in adults, but these medicines should only be given to infants and children with your doctor’s guidance.

What causes diarrhea?

Diarrhea can have numerous causes, including viruses, bacterial and parasitic infections, lactose intolerance, and use of antibiotic medications. Some people may experience diarrhea after consuming too much of the sugar fructose, which is found in fruits, honey, and some beverages. Artificial sweeteners found in sugar-free food products can also cause diarrhea for people who are sensitive to these sweeteners. In addition, diarrhea can occur after a surgery or with some chronic conditions, such as ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Is diarrhea a serious problem?

Diarrhea typically goes away after a few days, but if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, you may have a chronic health condition like inflammatory bowel disease, which should be evaluated by a doctor. Diarrhea is serious if it lasts longer than a few days, is accompanied by a fever, or includes bloody or black stools or severe stomach pain. Diarrhea can also cause dehydration, which may be indicated by dark colored urine, excessive thirst, fatigue, lack of urination, and weakness. If you or your child shows these signs of dehydration, it is important to seek immediate medical care.

How is diarrhea treated?

In many cases, diarrhea will resolve on its own without treatment after a few days. You can typically manage diarrhea at home by drinking plenty of water, getting enough sodium to replace lost electrolytes, and avoiding triggering foods, such as dairy or foods that are greasy or high in fiber. You may benefit from taking a probiotic or anti-diarrheal medication. If an underlying condition like a bacterial infection causes diarrhea, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Children with diarrhea may be advised to consume a beverage like Pedialyte to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. If diarrhea is persistent, your doctor will treat the underlying health condition, such as inflammatory bowel disease, that is causing diarrhea.

I don’t understand negative reviews. Schedule people were very kind, receptionist was kind, my nurse was amazingly kind . Dr. Bewick and her technical assistants were so kind. As a former medical person, I agree that patients need to take some responsibilities for their attitudes and behavior. These people are trying to give us the best possible results. I was given excellent directions (which I followed to the T). My first colonoscopy and very scared, but this staff, was wonderful! Will see them in 3 years.

Center for Digestive Health is a perfect place to go if you have any type of digestive issue. They make you feel very comfortable talking about any issue you may be experiencing and they ask all the appropriate questions all the while putting you at ease. When I called I was worried about something and they worked to get me right in. I saw the PA Noelle and she is just wonderful. Everyone at the desk and beyond are very welcoming and helpful. Dr. Weber has been my doctor there for years and I trust him explicitly. His assistant Debbie always helps me out and listens to me and is always very kind. The office is warm, clean and inviting. There are a few locations and so that makes it very nice. All in all I’m very impressed with this group of Doctors, Nurses and Assistants.

While embarrassing to talk about, I had to go in for my first colonoscopy screening. The center made the process fairly easy and straightforward. The prep work for the previous day was easy to follow and was not nearly as painful as I expected it to be. On the day of the procedure, I was checked in, wheeled into the procedure room, knocked out, and before I knew it, it was over and done with. I was in and out in just a little over two hours. The staff was very friendly and reassuring throughout. They even shared the results with me before I left. It was a very pleasant experience, considering. I highly recommend this facility. BTW - Everything checked out well.
Keith Z.
Professional and organized. The entire staff were friendly and made the experience very easy and stress free. Dr. Wille was excellent.

FAQs

What happens during my first visit?
If you are a new patient, you can expect to have a complete physical exam. You will also be asked detailed questions about your current problems and your past medical history, your current medications, allergies, your family history and other pertinent medical information. If you are taking medications, please bring a completed medical history form with you to your appointment. Once the physician has reviewed your medical information and completed the physical examination, a plan of care will be developed. You may need to be seen again in the office, be referred back to your family physician for follow-up care, or require additional testing. If additional tests are needed, we will assist you in scheduling these tests.
What if I need to schedule an endoscopic procedure?

An endoscopic procedure allows the physician to visualize a part of your gastrointestinal tract with a special instrument called an endoscope. If your family physician has ordered testing, you will be contacted by telephone by one of our staff members. If a physician orders testing and you are in the office, the procedure can generally be scheduled during the course of your visit. You will be given a date, time, and location for the test, as well as written instructions telling you how to prepare for the test. If you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to ask one of our staff members or the physician.

How do I get test results?

We ask that you wait 10 to 14 days before contacting us for results. Often results come from several different sources. This information needs to be compiled and reviewed by your physician before you can be appropriately advised.

What insurances do you accept?

We accept payment from most insurance companies including Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Physicians Health Plan, Cofinity, Sparrow Professional Health Network, Medicaid, McLaren, Health Plus, and several others. Accepted insurances are subject to change at any time without notice.

If your insurance requires an authorization from your primary care physician, you may be asked to assist us in obtaining this authorization.

All patients are responsible for all copays and deductibles at the time of service.

If you have any questions regarding your benefits or insurance coverage, please contact our Billing Department at 248-844-9710.
