Capsule endoscopy overview
Simply requiring a 12-hour fast along with prescription colon prep prior to the procedure, the Capsule Endoscopy procedure begins when the patient swallows the capsule with a small amount of water. Data and images are transmitted as the capsule passes through the digestive system and are received by the data recorder affixed to a belt worn by the patient.
After approximately eight hours, the patient returns the Data Recorder to our office for processing by a dedicated computer workstation. The computer’s RAPID® Application Software enables us to view and analyze the resulting patient video report.
Clinical efficiency
This non-invasive diagnostic exam provides a substantially improved level of visual imaging for early detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract disease. Over 120 peer reviewed journal articles have been published establishing capsule endoscopy as the gold standard for small bowel imaging.
Indications
This technology, cleared by the FDA for patients ages 10 and up, is intended for visualization of the small bowel mucosa as a tool in the detection of abnormalities of the small bowel.
Contraindications
Capsule Endoscopy is contraindicated for use under the following conditions:
- In patients with known or suspected gastrointestinal obstruction, strictures, or fistulas based on the clinical picture or pre-procedure testing and profile.
- In patients with cardiac pacemakers or other implanted electromedical devices.
- In patients with swallowing disorders.
