Hi, I’m Dr. Donat from Center of Digestive Health. I am a gastroenterologist here. I was born in Turkey and moved to Canada when I was a child, and did all my education in Canada, and finished my GI training at University of Ottawa. I am married with two sons.

Why did I become a physician?

People always ask me why I became a doctor or why I became a gastroenterologist. To be honest, I don’t really even know why, but ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I love what I do and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

The most rewarding part of my profession?

The most rewarding part of the job is that most patients, when they come in to see us, whether it’s some serious health issues, or whether they’re just no health issues at all. They may be worried that they have colon cancer for example, and we can do a simple diagnostic screening colonoscopy and let them know that everything’s fine. And once we tell them everything is fine and they don’t have cancer, it seems that patients are extremely relieved and the world’s burden has been taken off of them.

Of course, if they do have some illness or problem, to help them through that, and help guide them through that process, and let them know that they’re not alone and they don’t have to go through this by themselves is extremely rewarding.

Best health advice I have for my patients

The best health advice I have for my patients is really prevention, in terms of lifestyle modifications, being healthy eating, healthy lifestyle choices, physical activity, exercise. A lot of people don’t think that, you know, physical activity should have anything to do with your digestive health. It makes sense that food should have something to do with digestive health, but not physical activity from people’s perspective, but definitely if you’re more active, your GI system works better. If you’re more active, you have more endorphins, less issues, irritability and spasms, and cramps, and the whole lifestyle, and diet, of course is really key and very important for all aspects of digestive illnesses and digestive health.

I love what I do. I’d love to meet you and your family and help you with any digestive issues you may have. Come on in and see me!
